Dinner Time
If you are eating, you might want to stop before you look at the picture in this post.
First I want to share a poem that was read to me when I was a little girl. "The vulture eats between his meals, and that's the reason why he never ever really feels as good as you or I. His head is bald, his eyes are dim, his neck is getting thinner. Oh, what a lesson for us all..........to only eat at dinner." I'm sure that's not true. Seems to me his neck would be getting fatter if he snacked all the time. Oh well, whatever.
I was going somewhere yesterday, I forget where. I hadn't gone very far down our road when I saw this threesome having their dinner. They didn't seem inclined to fly off, so I got my camera from my purse and slowly drove a bit closer. Finally the 2 on the left flew away. The one on the right waited a couple of minutes, and then it flew away too. I have no doubt that as soon as the coast was clear, they returned to their meal. That's all right. They do a good job of keeping our roads clean. Vultures are so ugly up close, but when you see them soaring in the sky they look graceful and beautiful. I suppose if I were a small bird or animal I would think they looked super scary. Like many things.............it all depends on your perspective.
All right now, after these profound words of wisdom, you can go back to whatever you were snacking on.

the carrion eaters don't get the credit they deserve - they are indeed nature's "sanitation engineers"!
This is a wonderful story, so true to nature. I'm glad you slowed and captured this photo!
I'm glad I'm not hungry right now ~
Seriously, though, I enjoyed this post very much ~ they serve a purpose, that's for sure ~
I have actually met a few vultures in my life.
Are you referring to the kind with wings? or the 2 legged kind?
We have a lot of "road kill" on the back streets of our town....And plenty of vultures to clean them up....The road kills are mostly racoon's....For some reason they love to play chicken, and are usually the losers in the game....
Ha! I enjoyed your poem, your story, and your profound words of wisdom! We have lots of roadkill, especially on the county roads around the city of Springfield. (I ate supper in between reading the poem and finishing the post.
Thanks for not doing a close-up of the vulture's meal!)
Cute poem Gracia. Vultures are such ugly birds, no?
You asked about how to get new friends off of those among your comments. I just click on some names that I do not have as friends, and usually it opens to their site and you can go and comment there.
Every time I try that I get a page saying Oops, Google Chrome could not find that page or person. Maybe I need to use something other than Google, but I don't know how to do that.
I don't think I have ever seen a vulture outside of the zoo, but those were nasty looking! Here we have big, black birds who build huge nests in trees in colonies. They squawk something awful! Whenever I see them in back of our apartment, I grab a dish towel and scare them off! I don't want them starting a colony in my back yard! It's funny all the old cartoons with vultures. One often thinks of them sitting on a branch waiting for some poor, lost, starved guy to die so they can dig in!
I remember the vultures in Jungle Book. I liked that movie. We don't encourage the Canadian geese. One or two pair are OK. More than that becomes a problem. They leave big messes.
Wow! I like watching them ride the breeze.
Me too. They are so graceful.
