What is the best way to avoid spam?  I never had a problem before but tonight had about 12 comments from people who claim they found me on the net, and had marvelous things to say about my most wonderful blog.   I think I either deleted them or put them in trash.  Any advice from any of you, my friends?  Thanks.

  • Oh goodness, they got you now too? I have been dealing with this for the past week.

I have found what seems, or seemed until tonight, to help is go to comments, and on the left side bar scroll over where it says 'advanced' and then click on 'discussion settings'.
There I have added under comment moderation, and comment blacklist, all the words I can identify to eliminate the spammers.
It's all I've found to do so far. I am hoping it comes to an end soon if I just keep throwing everything in the spam box. I have deleted almost 200 comments from the spam box. :-(

  • If anyone gives you better advice, please share. :-)

  • I don't know, I wouldn't wish this misery on anyone. :-) I hope it passes for both of us and soon.

  • I'd suggest a memo to the help desk -- help@xanga.net, I believe. Eugenia will refer this issue to the techies, and they'll see what can be done.

  • I have my blog on "sign in lock" that way they have to pay to see my blog and the spammers are not into spending their own $$. I think that also prevents anyone from viewing my blog who doesn't have an active account but I'm willing to do that to avoid the spam.

  • Ok, I'm hoping maybe I've got this figured out.

Instead of posting words in the two boxes I told you about above,
You can put in the I.P. addresses of the spammers.... which can be found when looking at comments
(I found these after moving all spam comments to my spam box and then looking at them)

The I.P. addresses I have identified are
    114.44.214.195
    114.44.209.67
    111.248.137.46
    114.44.211.108

    I hope I am helping.

  • Please delete the above comment after you are done with it. I don't want the I.P. numbers to draw attention for the spammers so that they can change them.

    • I'm sorry, I'm not sure how to delete comments anymore. I tried, but don't think it worked yet. I did write down the letters, and plan to send them to Eugenie as Simret suggested. I haven't had anymore problems today. Maybe they gave up on me already? Probably not. If they do return, then I'll have to be more agressive. Thanks so much. I appreciate your help.

  • I was hoping all was well with you. I know you have other concerns.

  • I am not a spammer and I saw you on the internet line is pretty tricky but so is the devil too. ( The devil is in the details too.) I sometimes get lonely but not that lonely...

  • Hummm......disturbing. I'm trying to follow someone who has follower's lock on. She commented on my site and on friend's sites but for some reason I can't 'see' her. Crystalinne?

  • That has not happened to me yet.
