New Toy

Guess what I got for Christmas.  A slide scanner.  We have hundreds of slides that we took in the 60's and 70's.  Now I have a way to get them on the computer.   They are not the best quality, but here are a few of them.

These 2 were taken on campus at UCLA, where I was a student at the time.  This was before we were married.

We were married in Santa Barbara, in a beautiful church building.  It was a small wedding with just my mom and step-dad, my brother, and my husband's parents and aunt and uncle there.

Our first home was on campus at Cal Poly.  The little trailer was only 6' by 17'.  We used the community bathrooms that were across the way.  The community was known as Silver City, or Fertile Acres, because many of the couples had babies and young children.  I cooked using a hot plate, and a toaster oven.  Our icebox was small and it was a real icebox.  We had to buy ice for it every few days.  We paid $25. per mo. for the privilege of living there.  That included utilities.  We didn't mind the conditions.  We were young and in love.

These were a wonderful share. I have a Pandigital scanner that lets you slide the photo through a 'bar', which also has an SD card attached. I then put the SD card into the computer to download the pics. Is that what you got?

You might be able to improve the photos with a photo program (usually one comes with your computer) such as Picasa. I don't know a lot about them but many of the free programs allow you to play with the contrast and brightness which seems to be partially your problem with the old slides.

I would like to have one of those, we have lots of old slides, too. I don't remember why we didn't make pictures instead. Your scans turned out pretty well and are great, old pics! We can sure put up with a lot when we're in love!

My memory is getting so bad that I forgot what was the amount of rent when I lived in Santa Barbara in the 70's.

A lot of the old mobile homes were torn down for the scrap aluminum. I don't think there are many mobile trailer parks left in Santa Barbara and they are getting to be less of them in Los Angeles. Trailer parks is the halfway step between renting an apartment and getting a home.

I learned how to cook when I lived in apartments, my mother spoiled me when I lived at home.

@PPhilip - This was not really a trailer park as such. It was on-campus housing for married students. The trailers had been used as army barracks during WWI.

Is that Cal Poly Pomona? Or too early for that school? Hey, what happened to the wheels for that trailer?

@hombre_de_la_mancha - I expect the wheels were lost a long time before. That was at Cal Poly, SLO. Hubby went to the campus in Pomona for 2 years, but then transferred to SLO. He was an animal husbandry major, and eventually became a mechanic. Life takes interesting turns.

@GoneRetired - It's fairly easy to do the slides, but I had to have my son set up the machine for me. I never could have figured it out. I'm lucky to be able to blog at all.

@PPhilip - I asked my husband to be sure, and he said WWI, but you may be right. At any rate, they were old.

thanks for sharing! wonderful pics and a wonderful story.  young people could learn so much from the older generation--nowadays they think they have to move into a brand new, huge home when they get married.  --karen

Great photos! I spent 2002 living in an 8x20 travel trailer. It included a tiny bathroom, though. The only fond memories I have of it are Sunday afternoons, reading to the kids around the little table.

We started out in a 3 rm 3rd floor walkup in an old house in KCMO. We had a shower, sink, toilet in a walk in back out bath and the kitchen was about as small. Think it was 90 a mo. and we wondered how we could handle that. Keep posting.
